Random Experiences on the Water 2011

There were a number of experiences over the summer that were little one offs that I managed to capture so thought I'd just throw them in here. For no particular reason.

Cruising with Intrinsic & Arcturus

We wrapped up the cruising season by meeting up with Jim & Lesley aboard Intrinsic and Wayne & Rinna, Steve & Una, aboard Arcturus. Good company, good food, and good drink, not to mention ideal cruising weather, made for a great time together.

We spent an afternoon travelling to, and then transiting, Whiterock Passage, which is not for the faint of heart; to transit it you have to follow range marks part way in and then look behind you to use another set of range marks to complete your passage out. Otherwise the rocks have you for lunch.

After the transit we turned around and went back through, on our way to our final night together in Squirrel Cove. The next morning everyone headed out in different directions back to their home bases.

The Gilletts on Dorian I

Rachel, Dave, wee Bianca and Auntie Bre joined us for a couple of days on Dorian I. These photos recount a run to shore while in Squirrel Cove. This was Bianca's second cruise on Dorian I, and her first dinghy experience.

Mitlenatch Island 2011

We'd been by Mitlenatch Island a number of times while on Dorian I, but the seas had always been too rough to stop. This time we were fortunate so we dropped anchor in Northwest Bay and headed ashore for some exploring. The island is a nature preserve so care must be taken to stay on the trails.

Northwest Bay
As you may be able to discern, the island is essentially a barren desert; it is situated in the Gulf of Georgia at the point where the tides meet after flowing from the north and south.

During the summer the only human inhabitants are the volunteer naturalists who provide information and guidance to vistors. They also engage in artistic endeavours.
